Black currant

About

The black currant (Ribes nigrum) is a woody shrub and the plant is well known for its savory berries. It belongs to the family of Grossulariaceae. The black currant originally comes from the milder regions of both central and northern Europe and northern Asia. The plants grows well in damp and fertile soils. During summer, clusters of small and glossy black berries appear along the stems. These can be picked by hand or by machine. The berries are extremely rich in vitamin C and polyphenol phytochemicals.

Nowadays, black currants are extensively cultivated, both on commercial and domestic scale.
